How to Get to Pico do Arieiro by Rental Car: Road, Parking and Hours
Pico do Arieiro is 25 km from Funchal and takes 40-50 minutes by car. It's Madeira's third-highest peak (1,818m) and the only one you can drive straight to on a paved road. How to get to Pico do Arieiro from Funchal by car
Direct route (recommended):
- 1From central Funchal, head north towards Monte
- 2Follow the ER103 towards "Poiso - Pico do Arieiro"
- 3Pass through Poiso (1,400m) and keep climbing

GPS directions: search "Pico do Arieiro, Madeira" on Google Maps. It takes you straight there.
The road: the ER103 has tight bends and some narrow stretches, especially after Poiso. It's suitable for any rental car, including small economy cars. You don't need a 4x4.
Parking at Pico do Arieiro
There's free parking next to the viewpoint and mountain refuge. Capacity for around 100 vehicles.
In summer and at weekends: the car park fills up before 8am. If you arrive after 9am in July or August, you'll likely have to wait or park on the road (there are designated spots 200 metres before).
Tip: leave Funchal before 6:30am to watch the sunrise from the peak and park with no trouble. Sunrise over the clouds at Pico do Arieiro is one of Madeira's most spectacular experiences.
Temperature at Pico do Arieiro
The temperature at the top is 5-10°C colder than in Funchal. In summer, when it's 26°C in Funchal, Pico do Arieiro can be 16°C with wind.
Always bring: a jacket or fleece, even in August. The wind at the top can be intense.
In winter (December-February) there can be snow at Pico do Arieiro and the road can temporarily close.
The trail from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo
Madeira's most famous trail starts at Pico do Arieiro: the PR1 to Pico Ruivo (1,862m). It's 9 km with 700 metres of elevation gain and 3-4 hours of walking. It's one of the best trails in Portugal.
Logistics: if you do the full route (Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo), you need to plan your return transport. You can:

- ✓Reach Pico Ruivo and descend to Achada do Teixeira, where you can leave a car (requires two vehicles or a taxi back)

Can you get to Pico do Arieiro without a car?
There are organised tours from Funchal, but there's no direct public transport connection. A rental car is practically the only way to get there independently.
Is the road open all year round?
Under normal conditions, yes. In heavy winter snow it can temporarily close. Check conditions before heading up on December-February days.
Is there a restaurant or café at Pico do Arieiro?
Yes, there's a small refuge-café next to the car park with hot drinks, sandwiches and warm clothing as souvenirs.
Is it worth going up if it's cloudy?
Depends. If the clouds are below 1,800m, you'll drive above them and see the peaks emerging from the sea of clouds — a spectacular view. If the clouds are at the summit, visibility can be zero.
Do I need a special car to drive up to Pico do Arieiro?
No. Any standard rental car makes it up without trouble. Brakes should be in good condition for the descent. You don't need 4-wheel drive.
