Best Time to Visit Madeira: A Month-by-Month Guide

Madeira earns its nickname — Island of Eternal Spring — because the weather stays mild and manageable throughout the entire year. But every season has its character, and car hire prices vary considerably.

Madeira Weather Year-Round

Temperatures range between 17°C in winter and 24°C in summer at sea level. The north and mountains are cooler and wetter; the south coast around Funchal is consistently sunnier.

The Best Months to Visit

Spring: April and May — Peak Natural Beauty

Spring is widely considered the best time to visit Madeira. The Madeira Flower Festival (April) transforms Funchal into one of the most photographed events in Southern Europe. The levadas are in full colour and hiking conditions are excellent.

Temperatures hover around 19–21°C — warm enough for terraces, cool enough for mountain walks.

Summer: June to September — Busy, Sunny, More Expensive

Summer brings the most reliable sunshine, particularly on the south coast. The island fills with European tourists in July and August, which pushes up prices and reduces car hire availability fast.

Book your rental car at least 3–4 weeks in advance if visiting in summer. Prices are typically 20–35% higher than in winter.

Autumn: October and November — Quieter, Good Value

Crowds thin out noticeably after mid-September. Prices fall, yet the weather remains pleasant — around 22°C in October. An underrated window for independent travellers.

Winter: December to March — Festive Magic and Best Rates

Madeira has one of the most spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks displays in the world, officially recognised by Guinness World Records. January through March is quiet and cheap.

Car hire rates in January and February are often the lowest of the year.
