Madeira East Route by Car: Machico, Caniçal and Ponta de São Lourenço in Half a Day
The east route of Madeira by car covers approximately 80 km from Funchal to Ponta de São Lourenço, the island's easternmost tip. It crosses Santa Cruz, the international airport — with its runway over the sea — historic Machico and the Caniçal nature reserve. It's a half-day route, ideal for your first day after landing, and requires no prior experience of the island's roads.
Why This Is the Best Route for Your First Day in Madeira
You land at Madeira Airport, collect your rental car and have half a day ahead of you. The temptation is to head straight to Funchal. Mistake.
The east route gives you something better: starting from where you are, making the most of what's right to your right when you leave the airport, and reaching Funchal in the afternoon with the best views already saved on your phone.
There are no dangerous mountain bends. The VR1 is a modern motorway connecting the whole eastern corridor with the capital. The terrain is gentler than the north and west.

The route step by step
Funchal → Santa Cruz: the warm-up
Santa Cruz is 5 km from the airport. It holds a 16th-century Gothic church and a sea pool with free access and direct ocean views. 30 minutes is enough.
Madeira Airport: the world's most spectacular runway
Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport has its extended runway over the sea: 68 concrete pillars hold up 600 metres of runway directly over the ocean. From the outdoor viewpoint, free and accessible by car, you can watch planes land almost skimming the water.
Recommended time: 20 minutes. Enough for photos and to understand why this airport appears in every "world's most extreme landings" video.
Machico: where it all began
Machico is Madeira's second-largest town and was the first land sighted by Portuguese colonisers in 1419. Park near the beach and spend an hour on:
- ✓The Forte de São João Baptista, the triangular fort guarding the bay
- ✓A seafront terrace for a coffee or a poncha
- ✓Trying the fresh seafood at one of the bay's restaurants
Caniçal: the last village before the end of the world
Caniçal was Portugal's only active whaling port until 1981. Today it's home to the Museu da Baleia (whale museum) and is the transition point into the wild territory of the eastern tip. Fill up on fuel here — there are no more petrol stations until you're back on the VR1.
Ponta de São Lourenço: the landscape no one expects to find in Madeira
Ponta de São Lourenço is Madeira's easternmost tip and part of a protected nature reserve. The terrain is arid, rocky, almost African: it doesn't look like Madeira.
The PR8 trail is an 8 km round trip with medium difficulty. No mountain gear needed, but you do need non-slip shoes and water.
What you'll find at the end:
- ✓Simultaneous views of the North Atlantic and South Atlantic from the same point
- ✓The Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto, with views of the Ilhéu da Cevada
- ✓A landscape comparable to southern Fuerteventura — nothing like the rest of the island
Tip: arrive at the car park before 10am in high season. Trail access is free.
Back to Funchal via the VR1
The VR1 motorway connects Caniçal with Funchal in under 30 minutes, toll-free. You'll get back with time for dinner at Mercado dos Lavradores or the historic centre.
